Sarcopenia is the occurrence of muscle loss that occurs during aging, but most aging adults are not aware that becoming frail is preventable. For the Office on Women’s Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, we developed a winning proposal to first educate physicians about the importance of screening for and discussing sarcopenia with aging patients, and second, to educate aging women about sarcopenia and the importance of strength and resistance training for prevention. Our consultant earned their Senior Fitness Specialist (SFS) certification at the proposal stage to assure the client of an informer perspective. Partners included Medscape (curriculum for physicians) and the Alliance for Aging Research (subject matter experts). Given the relatively small budget for a national campaign, our approach included pacing outreach across the four-year contract to ensure wide scale adoption and behavior change.
